There is an NPPA-sponsored panel discussion called “Navigating the Downturn” coming up next Wednesday, November 11. Former newspaper and magazine photographers will talk about maintaining a client base during an economic downturn. While this is not one of our regular student chapter meetings, the chapter is co-sponsoring the event. The panel will be held in CMA 3.120 from 5pm to 7:30pm. Read about the panel here.

At our last meeting we had the pleasure of hosting a lighting workshop put on by local photographer and lighting specialist Kirk Tuck. He demonstrated his theories of minimalist lighting and answered questions ranging from how to deal with varying color casts from different types of lights, to how to adjust your lighting to photograph someone who wears glasses.

Tuck’s essential lighting arrangement included one shoe mount flash on a lighting stand, tethered to your camera via a remote trigger. Between the flash and the subject he placed a 2-stop diffusion scrim, then played with the distances and angles between the flash, the scrim and the subject to change the quality of light, generally placing the scrim a little bit to the front of and as close as possible to the face of a subject.

For anyone interested in learning more about Tuck’s technique, he has a book out called Minimalist Lighting that is available for purchase on Amazon. Tuck also suggested some online resources for anyone who wants to read up on lighting techniques, Strobist and Lighting Essentials.
