… for the annual UT NPPA spring photojournalism show.

Please come to CMA 3.124 at 8 p.m. this Wednesday, April 13, to get and give critique on photos for submission to the show. The meeting is not mandatory (like once stated), but your attendance is highly encouraged. Attendance will not affect you chance of getting in. We will also be discussing volunteer opportunities and releasing more information about the show. So bring in the images you are considering for submission on a CD or flash drive. Remember: they must have some photojournalism aspect.

NPPA Photo Show Submission Requirements

TWO BIG CHANGES

1- Wednesday’s meeting is no longer mandatory to participate in show. But bring images for critique if you want. Being a paid member of the organization is still required for submission though ($5 or official NPPA membership)

2- Image submission is now due, on CD or flash drive, Monday (18th) at 4pm to Spencer Selvidge’s Journalism Office mailbox. We wanted to give everyone more time. No exceptions. We will do reminder emails.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE AND DO

- DO NOT REDUCE OR INCREASE THE IMAGE SIZE. Print quality will suffer if you do it incorrectly. Let the printers handle that part.

- MINIMUM size is 3400 pixels on the long side for our intended 17″ prints assuming we get access to Genuine Fractals. If not we will have to rethink sizing of prints.

- If you have an issue with either of these, talk to Spencer ASAP.

- Color or B&W accepted.

- All images must be based in journalism.

- There needs to be a thought-out caption included with the image for it to be in the show.

- Put your cutline/caption under DESCRIPTION. No exceptions. Use the photolab if you need access to PhotoMechanic or Bridge.

- DO NOT put your name in the file info. Include a document that matches your EID to your name

- 5 submissions per category (Documentary is 5-7 images per story, up to 3 stories)

- Number each category from 001-005. No exceptions. Name your file category_eid_xxx.jpeg.

The meeting on April 13^th is no longer mandatory for those who are submitting to the show. But at this meeting we will break off in to small groups and review your selections. Please bring your submissions, hopefully with captions, to this meeting. We will go over the naming conventions again as well. YOUR SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE on MONDAY THE 18Th by 4p.m.

The judge, Lisa Krantz, will be reviewing all images very early next week.

CATEGORIES

The following are the possible categories for submission. You may submit into more than one category if you choose!

NEWS (filename news)

Spot, general, or feature news images are appropriate for this category.

Spot news is defined as a picture of an unscheduled or breaking event for which no advance planning was possible.

General news is defined as a picture of a scheduled political, social or cultural event for which advance planning was possible.

Feature news is defined as a candid picture of a “found situation” containing strong human interest, a fresh view of the ordinary or humor. In all cases the dignity of the subject must be respected.

Examples: demonstrations, staged promotional or political events and other daily news, fires, accidents or natural disasters, feature stories, etc…

PICTORIAL (filename pict)

A graphic image that expresses beauty, tension, harmony, chaos and other abstract concepts through composition, tonal and color relationships more than through human interaction.

Examples: environmental imagery, sense of place images, graphic images, etc…

PORTRAIT (filename port)

A picture of a person that reveals the essence of the subject’s character. This can be an environmental or studio portrait. If Photoshop or other post-production techniques were used other than those generally accepted in a strict journalism sense, please note this for the judges and mark as a photo illustration. (For example, if you removed a blemish from someone’s face for a studio portrait, this has made your image an illustration.) Make sure there is a strong, underlying narrative.

DOCUMENTARY (filename Doc)

An image from a long-form photographic essay or extended narrative story which portrays important contemporary concerns or social issues an/or that reports on significant events, celebrates life, portrays sport or explores environmental, social, economic or political topics. While this is a single image category for the show, it would be a good idea to actually submit 5-7 images from the essay and allow the judges to choose which image best represents the body of work and tells the essence of the full story best in a single image.

This is a chance to spend the day studying light as you watch over the shoulders of two experienced professionals. Their paths may be different, but the end goal is the same — to create interesting light that is appropriate to the subject and to do it in an intuitive way. chien-chi chang workshop

On March 12-13, and if there is enough demand, March 14-15, you have the chance to spend a weekend with Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang. He will be giving an advanced documentary storytelling workshop. Chien-Chi Chang has won many awards from many organizations, including: CPOY, POY, NPPA, World Press Photo, W. Eugene Smith Award Grant on Humanistic Photography, and many others. His most recent major award-winning work can be seen here. And make sure you check out the article, too.

The workshop will consist of three components:
1-Visual Exercises: Participants are expected to photograph in a most demanding condition to sharpen their awareness and ability.
2-Portfolio critique: one-on-one review of participants’ portfolio, maximum 25 pictures each.
3-Multimedia: In the course of reviewing 4 to 6 Magnum in Motion stories, we analyze the methodology of audio, still and video elements of each story and explore the possibility of newer practice in multimedia.

Cost: $250
Available spots: 12, each
Time: March 12-13 or 14-15, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. both days (and much further into the night for sure)
Who can apply: any current UT student with an interest in strengthening their documentary storytelling. There are no limits to skill.

How to apply:
You will need an image portfolio of no more than 15 images to be judged by Chien-Chi himself. They must be 1000 pixels on the long side and saved in high quality (but not best). They must be named (Last name)_(Firstname)_(3digit serial #). Ex: Selvidge_Spencer_001. Captions are not required. Show what you think best encapsulates the work that you have done. There is no formula or specifics beyond that.

You also need a ~200-300 word note as to why you want to participate and/or what you hope to gain.

The written and visual components need to be presented in digital form on CD or DVD or flash drive. You will not get them back.

DUE DATE: February, 24, 2011. 4:59p.m.

Where do you send or deliver them?: These are due to Spencer Selvidge’s mailbox in CMA 6.144. Ask someone, they will help you find it.

here’s to a new semester

Well, I would say that our first meeting of the semester went pretty well. Everyone seemed enthusiastic about coming up with projects and workshops in which we can learn and become a tighter knit group this semester. We also voted in two new co-presidents and a new secretary. Trent Lesikar, a senior photojournalism major, and Raymond Thompson, a first-year photojournalism graduate student, are our new co-presidents, and Lizzie Chen, also a first-year photojournalism graduate student, is our new secretary.

As a reminder, we will be meeting every Wednesday this semester at 8 p.m. in CMA 3.124, unless otherwise noted.

Hinterland: the 2010 fall show

In German, hinterland literally means the land behind [the city].

Hinterland is our 2010 fall show featuring 35 images from our members that has been juried by Senior Curator of the the Harry Ransom Center, Roy Flukinger. Upon viewing, you will notice most of the photos share something in common: distance from the subject, hence “hinterland.”

Date: December 5
Time: 6 p.m to 10 p.m.
Place: Pump Project Satellite, 1109 Shady Lane, Austin, TX

Photos will be for sale on a silent auction basis. The auctioning will end at 9 p.m. Immediate payment is required–accepting only cash and checks. Proceeds will go directly to the UT student chapter of NPPA.

Slideluck Potshow

Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit arts organization that provides an opportunity for artists and arts-lovers to gather around food, friends, and artwork. The evening begins with a couple hours of mingling and dining on the home-cooked delights of those who attend, and then the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and another spectacular slideshow commences.

The third Austin Slideluck Potshow will be held on Friday, Dec. 3.
Potluck begins at 7 p.m. and the slideshow at 9 p.m.

Hot Mama’s Café is proud to host what is sure to be the biggest stop on the 2010 East Austin Studio Tour and you are invited to be part of the fun. Mama is bringing together more than 40 artists, performers, and businesses for this year’s tour and all artists are encouraged to showcase their work at Hot Mama’s and The Pedernales Condos.

This year’s tour will take place over two weekends- November 13/14 and 20/21.

There is no entry fee to participate and Mama will not take a commission from your sales. Let Mama do all the hard work and all you have to do is show up and share your art.

MANDATORY MEETING, Oct. 21, 8 p.m., CMA 4.310

Our meeting this Thursday, Oct. 21, is absolutely mandatory for participation in the fall show. At the meeting we will critique images in small groups.

Bring no more than 20 images for the critique.

This will also be your last chance to pay membership dues. Dues are $5 dollars and are also required for participation in the fall show.

We will meet at 8 p.m. in CMA 4.310 << note the room change!

lighting workshop, THIS WEEKEND

Local photographer Brenda Ladd will be hosting a studio and outdoor lighting workshop from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 2.

She will teaching studio set-up, lighting and posing, outdoor lighting techniques, on-camera strobe and the use of reflectors.

There is limited class size so make your reservation NOW. The cost is $95 per person.

We will do our best to keep our members updated with the latest photo contests and submission opportunities, jobs and internships and scholarships. You will find this information in the sections at the top of the blog.

Now, look to right. Under “categories” you should see a new section called “links.” This is where you will find cool websites that we talk about in meetings and any other beneficial resources.
